Please tell us a little bit about your experiences here in Australia. The more interesting it is, the more other Singaporeans & Malaysians will enjoy reading it!
1. What brought you to move to
I come because of equal opportunities here. Not only is it better for my career but the lifestyle here is so conducive. There’re actually lots of things to do other than going to the shopping centres during your days off. In KL, that’s what most folks go.
I also notice that here the people also play by the rules – whether it’s the admission to the local university or traffic rules. So they expect you to play by the same rules. It’s certainly what you know and not who you know.
I’m also getting married to an Aussie Chinese girl soon. Met her here. She’s just awesome, "what a beauty!"
2. What were the biggest hurdles you had to overcome when you first came here to
I suppose one of the first few challenges is learning to get around and the way people conduct themselves. One can adapt to the culture shock if they’re willing to adapt. One other thing: your Malaysian licence is not much use here. You’ve to resit for the practical driving test. My sister took this test and she flung! She took it three times and passed on the fourth after some guidance from yours truly. I guess Malaysians do have poor driving record and hence, this ruling. I thought I was a ‘great’ driver. But hey, I’m actually a better driver here. People expect you to observe the rules and btw, no double parking here!
3. How did you overcome those hurdles?
One thing for sure is your website. It certainly provided me some useful insights and tips in settling down here. I thought that’s really, really helpful and important.
4. What tips would you give for other Malaysians coming to
By reading your website!! C’mon, getting to know where to find the best discounts and savings is a great help. Plus other useful stuff on the how-to and what-to list! The other thing is, you should actually make friends with other Malaysians who had settled here or are in similar situation with you.
5. Can you tell at least 2 funny stories of your experience when you first came to
One is certainly the way we speak. We’re so used in saying lah at the end of our sentences. I got lots of stares. We’ve have to be more aware of how we speak.
When travelling in car with a mate once, he asked “Shall I do a U-eee?”....with my mouth-watering, I immediately said yes, thinking that he meant “yau yee”(salted dried fish) ....but that dish was never made!
