S Megaswati Interview

Please tell us a little bit about your experiences here in Australia. The more interesting it is, the more other Singaporeans & Malaysians will enjoy reading it!

1 What brought you to move to Australia?
I heard that the mangoes here are huge (during the mangoes season Dec/Jan) and the

Lychees are bountiful!

No, seriously I moved here to have a better lifestyle, layback (instead of the mad rat race back home) and better weather but little did I know that come summer, it’s like getting into a heated oven and those irritating flies literally become your shadow!

2. What were the biggest hurdles you had to overcome when you first came here to Australia? (Food, learning the lingo, getting used to early shopping hours?)
Of course, there are few challenges and food is naturally a big factor. I mean you can get Malaysian food here but it’s not quite the same taste. 2 pieces of “Roti Canai” here cost about A$9.90 with a little curry sauce to dip in when you can get them for 1.20 ringgit in Malaysia plus a piece of chicken for extra 1.50 ringgit and on top of that , that yummy ‘Teh tarik’ that goes with it!. Malaysian food is still best found in Malaysia. Also, I’m an absolute fan of “Indian/Mamak rojak” and I just can’t find them anywhere here....so, aiyoh, if you know of somewhere, hurry up and let me know ok.

The other thing is getting greeted everywhere you go “how are you today” can be pretty annoying after a while when most people don’t really mean it.

3. How did you overcome those hurdles?
Well, you just have to accept it-lah....what to do, that’s life. There are always advantages and disadvantages as you journey through life. But learning how to cook through recipes (internet, friends) was crucial for me. Also I had family members here who helped me feel comfortable.

4. What tips would you give for other Malaysians coming to Australia, to help them in the “settling down” process?
“Makan puas-puas” and “shop kau-kau” before you emigrate haha! Also I would say find good contacts here (friends, family) who understand your position. I mean it can be hard if you don’t know anyone at all. Find some Malaysian friends here to hand around with.

5. Can you tell at least 2 funny stories of your experience when you first came to Australia?

Double parking. Once I doubled parked outside a bank thinking it’ll be just for a few minutes. When I came out I saw a ticket on my windscreen. When I went to settle the fine, I requested for a discount. The clerk replied, “Sorry mate, this is not Malaysia!”.
